Chapter 101 of 161

GEJ 1.101.1

When Peter had finished the song, he spoke in a very solemn tone: ‘My friends and brothers! What a difference between us now and David then, when he gave the people this glorious song of praise!? When he sang, he raised his eyes up beyond the stars! For at that time, according to human conceptions, Jehovah dwelt in inaccessible light above all the stars. But what might David do here now, when He to whom he raised his eyes up beyond all the stars—’ I say, ‘Stop, friend Peter! That is enough again; just consider who all are among us!?’

GEJ 1.101.2

Peter immediately checks himself and calls all the guests to the evening meal, which consists chiefly of bread and well-prepared fish.

GEJ 1.101.3

But Judas asks Peter whether wine could be had for money anywhere nearby. And Peter answers and says, ‘A couple of field paths away there is an inn; wine is supplied there for money.’ When Judas hears this, he asks Peter again whether he has anyone he could send to fetch a whole wineskin full.

GEJ 1.101.4

Peter says, ‘You know and can see my whole household; I have no one to send! But if you want wine, go there yourself and make a bargain with the innkeeper, and that way you will fare best.’ Judas says, ‘Ah, rather than go myself, I shall do without the wine!’ Peter says, ‘Do as you please; I cannot give you any servants, for my fishing hands still have more than enough to do at the lake. But my wife and my children and my mother-in-law, as you yourself can see, already have their hands quite full, and surely you will not wish to demand that I myself should now, in the evening, go and bring a whole wineskin of wine here for you!?’ Judas says, somewhat annoyed, ‘Well, well, I only meant well by you, because I see that you have no wine; for in any case I alone would have paid, whatever the wineskin might have cost.’

GEJ 1.101.5

Peter says, ‘There is One among us who at Cana, at the wedding of Simon, who is also here among us, turned water into wine. This One could do the same now too, if it were necessary; but since it is certainly not necessary now, we can also make do with the especially good water that my clean household well provides.’

GEJ 1.101.6

Judas says, ‘Very well, very well, I too am quite content with that, since I myself hold good water in high esteem. But precisely on such an occasion, wine would not be unwelcome either!? Yet if that certain one, whom I too now believe I know, can indeed make wine out of water, then surely he could now do you such a favor!?’

GEJ 1.101.7

I say, ‘Then go down to the well and drink! For the well shall give you wine, but everyone else only water.’

GEJ 1.101.8

Then Judas went at once to the well and drew water; but when he drank the water he had drawn, it was wine of the finest kind, and he became so drunk that he remained lying beside the well and was in danger of falling into it, for it was deep, had not some of Peter’s servants seen him and brought him into the house. But it was good that it happened so; for on this evening I healed a multitude afflicted with all manner of diseases and pestilences, and drove out evil spirits from many. And at these signs Judas would have caused us trouble.
