The selfish and loveless person is subject to divine-universal law. Because of his unbelief and self-will, the Father has no access to the shaping of his life. The person goes spiritually blind through his earthly existence, sees no higher spiritual meaning or purpose in his existence, usually lives only for the gratification of his senses, piles up material treasures, and fights a blind struggle for life; yet all his doing and striving is transient, and death takes everything away from him again. Thus he finally dies into the misguided and dark consciousness of his self-will, obstinacy, pride, and misdirected love. This barren and desolate land forms his sphere in the beyond, where he remains and wanders until he opens himself to a God of grace and mercy.
If a person entrusts himself to God in faith and lets Him into his life, a corresponding gradual drawing-near takes place. This person has recognized that God is truth, love, and life, and that without Him there is no life worth living and no liberation from the valley of sin and death. He leaves blind fate behind, becomes increasingly able to see in the light of God’s love, and recognizes the true and imperishable values of life. Through his humble turning to the heavenly Father, the Father gains access to the person’s life. Then the redemptive act of Jesus Christ becomes effective and takes the person out of the law of the Godhead and places him into divine mercy. Within it he becomes increasingly aware of Jesus’ presence in his heart, recognizes that everything good in and through him comes from the Father and therefore has eternal validity. He feels the affection and love of his heavenly Father ever more intimately, until finally a union takes place in their mutual love.
